The first collected works of Academician Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov (1921-1989) include ‘Memories’ (in three volumes), a collection of articles, letters, speeches and interviews ‘Anxiety and Hope’ (in two volumes), as well as the first published novel-document ‘ Diaries of Andrei Sakharov and Elena Bonner (in three volumes). The first volume publishes the beginning of the documentary novel by A. Sakharov and E. Bonner ‘Diaries’ - a kind of work formed from the diary entries of Andrei Dmitrievich and Elena Georgievna, letters, drawings, as well as extensive contemporary commentaries by E.G. Bonner, who also told the background of this joint work, so called ‘Before the Diaries.’ The first volume covers the period from 1977 to 1979. The second volume publishes the continuation of the documentary novel by A. Sakharov and E. Bonner ‘Diaries’, covering the period from 1980 to 1985.
