Rozhdenie gosudarstva. Moskovskaia Rus' XV-XVI vekov [Birth of the State]
This book is about the formation of Russian statehood. But instead of the traditional story of military campaigns and the annexation of lands, the author focuses our attention on the internal aspects of state-building: gaining sovereignty, forming management structures, functions of the monarch and his advisers, developing key concepts and ideologies, the role of elected bodies, etc. The author examines the development of the Moscow state in the 15th and early 17th centuries in a broad comparative perspective - from Spain in the west to the Ottoman Empire in the east - and concludes that this is one of the variants of the common European model of the modern state. Mikhail Krom is a Doctor of Historical Sciences, a professor at the European University at St. Petersburg, an expert in the history of early modern times and historical comparative studies, and the author of numerous scientific works.
